Semiotics - Signs and Symbols

Semiotics is the philosiphicial theory of signs and symbols, incorporating meaning, metaphor and symbolism etc. Semiotics shows the combination and use of simples and signs and the way we interpret them in different ways. How one person may interpret something different with an image than without. As both consumer and creator of design and visual art, we decode the meaning the meanings from signs and symbols with ease. What we are doing is mainly subconscious so that we can determine our feelings and attitudes.

Semiotics is also a very useful way of analysing and uncovering certain types of ideology that are at work in the media.
During Anna Powell seminar she gave us an example to create small stories with text and images. we firstly watched a short clip on how someone had used the images above to create a story with different meanings than intended. Below was the short story that I created using the images and text provided.
